To make things simpler and easier to understand, we will demonstrate the usage of DT Template via an example.

For our example, we will create two DT Section templates - DT Section 1 template and DT Section 2 template - as below:

  1. DT Section 1 template contains two items. Note that the Title of this Section node, which is DT Section 1, is not to be confused with the name of the DT Section template itself.

  2. DT Section 2 template contains three items and modified (not default) Global Configuration settings. Note that the Title of this Section node, which is DT Section 2, is not to be confused with the name of the DT Section template itself.

We will now create a DT Exam Form template and incorporate the above two DT Section templates within it.

  1. Create a DT Exam Form template named DT ExamForm 1 template. Note that the Ident and Title of this ExamForm node, which is DTExamForm1, is not to be confused with the name of the DT Exam Form template itself.

  2. We will now add the DT Section 1 template under the ExamForm node. Right-click the ExamForm node and select Section from the context menu.

  3. In the Add Template pop-up that opens, select Section_DT_Section_1 from the drop-down, which is the DT Section 1 template, as mentioned earlier. Click Save.

  4. This new Section node corresponding to DT Section 1 template now shows up under the ExamForm node with its included items and settings.
  5. We will now add the DT Section 2 template under the Placeholder Section node. Right-click the Placeholder Section node under the ExamForm node and select Section from the context menu.

  6. In the Add Template popup that opens, select Section_DT_Section_2 from the drop-down list, which is the DT Section 2 template, as mentioned earlier. Click Save.

  7. This new Section node corresponding to DT Section 2 template now shows up under the ExamForm node with its included items and settings.

  8. Now add a Placeholder template under the ExamForm node. Right-click the ExamForm node and click Section from the context menu.

  9. In the Add Template popup, select Section-Placeholder from the drop-down list, and click Save.

  10. The new Placeholder Section node now shows up under the ExamForm node.
  11. Click Save button at the bottom of the page. This opens the Template Usage pop-up. Click the Save button to save the changes to DT ExamForm 1 template. Click OK to confirm the save.

  12. Now select a relevant Project under a Standard Item Bank from the ExamDeveloper Home page and navigate to the Create/Edit Exam Form page to create a new exam form named Exam Form test 1. Include two items from the project, and a section, which also contains two items. Select DT ExamForm 1 from the Exam Form Template drop-down.

You can see the section called Test Section included in this exam form contains two items.

  13. Select the Contents tab, where you will find that the Placeholder drop-downs for the Unsectioned and Sectioned item groups has been populated with the Placeholders from the DT ExamForm 1 template. Select different Placeholders for Unsectioned and Sectioned item groups and save Exam Form test 1.

  14. Select Exam Form test 1 from the Exam Forms (View Exam) page and click Build QTI Package to open the selected exam form on the Delivery Configuration Tool page.

  15. You will notice that the exam form opens in a read-only mode.
  16. Click the ExamForm - DT ExamForm 1 node. This corresponds to DT ExamForm 1 template.

  17. Click Section - $S1. This corresponds to the Unsectioned (independent) items. Notice that the settings for Placeholder created in step 10 are applied here.

  18. Click the node Section - DT Section 1. This corresponds to DT Section 1 template and contains its items along with its settings.

  19. Click the node Section - Test Section. This corresponds to the Test Section contained in the Exam Form test 1. Notice that it contains the items from that section and the settings of the default Placeholder from DT ExamForm 1 template.

  20. Click the node Section - DT Section 2. This corresponds to DT Section 2 template and contains its items as well as its settings.
