Enhanced Matching items - Single target

Available from2001 (approximately January 2020)
Rollout paceFull  Full rollout - users will have immediate visibility as a result of upgrade
Last updated11 July, 2019

In the event that an item has been partially reviewed (but additional users are still required to agree on a decision to trigger a state change), then any modification that results in a new revision will reset the review for the current state, necessitating a ‘re-review’ of the item.

This enhancement will enable a project manager to override this rule during a batch edit, so that a partially complete review can continue where it left off, with the updated data, without requiring a ‘re-review’.

Note: this setting is ignored on review states that:

  • Only require one reviewer to complete.
  • Have not been started.
  • Have already been completed.

Translate Questions permission and Translate Assignments

Available from1909 (approximately September 2019)
Rollout paceFull

Currently ExamDeveloper requires Enhanced Matching item to contain at least 2 targets when 1 target is supported by Athena. This change allows users to submit Enhanced Matching items with a single token and a single target added to the item.

Removal of 'Ignore Item Level Shuffle Response' setting

Available from2003 (approximately March 2020)
Rollout pace Full rollout - users will have immediate visibility as a result of upgrade
Last updated

Currently ExamDeveloper the only way to give a user translator permissions is to assign them as Project Manage. This gave them too many permissions that could include editing the original item along with all other items. To avoid this we are enhancing ExamDeveloper so that Translators can create translated items without full permissions to the application. With the enhancement:

  • A new Translate Questions permission is added to the Create Roles page.
  • Project Managers will be able to:
    • Create Translator roles with this new permission and assign it to various users.
    • Create Translate assignments for the translators - who can work on specific translate assignments.
    • Configure email notifications for Translate assignments and allow translators to view their translated (submitted) items.
  • Translators will see a new Translator tab on the ExamDeveloper landing page and a new Translate link under the Develop Questions tab.
    • Translator users will be able to do translation using the Side-by-side translation page similar to what they are currently using.
    • Based on the project settings, translators will have access to their translated items.
  • Translate assignments will work similar to Write, Review, and Validate assignments.
  • After this change Project Managers will not have the ability to perform Translate Side-by-Side from the Manage → Project Bank page. In order to perform the Translate Side-by-Side action, users must be assigned the Translate Question permission and they must be assigned a Translate assignment.

Batch Clear Formatting

...

For QTI templates and packages, the Ignore Item Level Shuffle Response configuration highlighted in the screenshot below will be removed:

Image Added

The Shuffle Response property in both the item Advanced Properties menu and the QTI PearsonSectionControl node will not be affected.

Image Added

In the past, Ignore Item Level Shuffle Response has enabled users to ignore/omit the Shuffle Response property set in the Item Advanced Properties menu, when set to Yes or No. However, the new best practice is to have a value of Not Set when the user wishes to rely on the section attribute instead of the item attribute, per the screenshot below.

Note that this property can be set as the default for new items and/or batch edited for existing items.

Enhanced Matching items Scoring - option to use Add or Set

Available from2003 (approximately March 2020)
Rollout pace Full rollout - users will have immediate visibility as a result of upgrade
Last updated

ExamDeveloper Batch Edit feature will be enhanced with this work. It will have the ability to remove font-face and/or font-size using Batch Edit. There will also be an option to clear formatting through Batch Edit.

...

The current Advanced Scoring for Enhanced Matching only allows for the correct responses to Add correct combinations and does not have the option to Set. Also, the maxvalue adds up all the values of the possible outcomes and does not have an option to select the value with the highest score.

This change will allow users to decide to use Add or Set in Advanced Scoring for Enhanced Matching items. And, if Add is selected the maxvalue will be a sum of all the correct combinations. If Set is selected then the maxvalue will be the highest value.

Changes to project sharing rules for items and cases

ExamDeveloper will support audio (.mp3, .wav, and .ogg) file types after this work. Users will be able to add these file types to the asset library, and attach them to item content.

In addition, users will be able to configure QTI attributes like - auto_play, auto_loop, loop_available, progress_bar, play_available, etc. for audio and video files in the item content. When an item or case is removed from a project, it is automatically added to the default 'itembank' project, which is not desirable behavior for many managers. We will be changing the rules around item and case sharing so that:

  • Users will not be able to remove an item or case from the current project if it is editable. They will see an error if this is attempted.

  • A user will still be able to make the item or case editable in a new project; doing so will also continue to make the item viewable in the old project.

  • Users will still be able to remove an item or cases from the current project if it is viewable. Furthermore, it will now be possible to remove the item from the default ‘itembank’ project.
  • Making items and cases editable, viewable or removing them from projects will no longer also share them automatically into the default ‘itembank’ project (this will now need to be a manual action.)

Note: this change will have no impact on sharing exams, sections, or collections, etc.

Legacy custom report retirement

...

By introducing the most recent custom report available to Project Managers on the the Manage → Reports page page, we are left with three older custom reports that have now been surpassed and are due for retirement. We will be removing the following three custom reports from ExamDeveloper:

...

Project Managers who are still working with these reports should switch to the custom report available at Manage → Reports (in the Custom Reports tab).

The following JSON data will be exported in an improved format to be consistent with the user interface:

For metadata:

  • editor will be renamed type.
  • type will show the user interface name (e.g., Dropdown List, Block Text, etc.) instead of a number.
  • appliesTo will be renamed displayOn.
  • displayOn will show the user interface name (e.g., Question, Exam, Asset) instead of a number.

For review workflow:

  • reviewStateName (e.g., Review 1, Review 2, etc.) will now show the name of the review state.
  • stateName is not populated and so will be removed.

For user tracking information:

  • state will be added (e.g., Draft, Review, Completed, etc.)
  • reviewStateName will be added (e.g., Review 1, Review 2, etc.)
  • stateName is not populated and so will be removed.
  • reviewAction will be added (e.g., Advanced, Returned, etc.)

We've heard that having the allow enemies check box on the build section/exam pages can be a hindrance as, if enemies are not allowed on a section or exam, then two items on the same section or exam cannot easily be made enemies of each other. The user is then forced to change the exam/section rule, to set up the enemy relationship.

Since we always show whether enemies exist or not when saving a section or exam, we will be removing this check box (for new and existing sections/exams). This means ExamDeveloper will:

  • Continue to show if the exam or section has enemies, whenever the exam or section is saved.
  • Always allow writers and reviewers to create enemy relationships, even if the two items to be made enemies are on the same section or form.
