Point and Click items require the candidate to interact with an image in order to provide a response.
For Point and Click items, the candidate is asked to click on an area in the image, corresponding to the information provided in the Question stem.
- Select the Develop Questions → Write Item menu.
- Click the Write Question link.
On the Write Question page, select Point and Click from the Question Type drop-down list.
Create a Point and Click Item
The item author specifies one or more area(s)/point(s) on the image to identify a correct response. ExamDeveloper provides an interface for users to create the questions. How they are presented to the candidate depends on the Assessment Driver used to deliver the Exam. An Assessment Driver is software owned by a test delivery provider used to present questions to candidates.
- Enter the question candidates must answer in the Question Stem field. Enter the information or objective the candidate needs in order to respond appropriately.
- Click OK in the Alert message so you can add an image to the Shape Editor.
- Click the Select/Upload Image link above the Shape Editor to select an image for the item. The supported image types for Point and Click Questions are .JPG, .JPEG, .GIF, .PNG, .BMP, .DCM, . ODG, .TGA, .SVG, and .TIF.
Click the Retrieve Assets button. and then click the Attach Asset icon for the desired asset.
- Click OK when the image has been attached message appears and Close the Attach Asset pop-up window.
Enter the Shape Labels you want to add to the image, one in each shape label field provided.
Select the check boxes for the correct shape label field(s). Leave the check boxes for the incorrect shape labels as unselected.
- Select Hot Spot (default) or Hot Area radio button to determine how the candidate views the question in the Assessment Driver.
- If Hot Spot is selected, the drop zones are not visible even when the mouse cursor is moved over them. When the candidate clicks on the Asset in the Assessment Driver, a point is marked where they clicked.
- If Hot Area is selected, the drop zones are displayed as soon as the mouse cursor is moved over them. When the candidate clicks on any of the drop zones in the Asset in the Assessment Driver, the entire drop zone is marked and becomes visible.
You are now ready to work with the inserted Asset.
Using the editor functions described below, create the shaded areas that correspond to the correct response for each label. For every label, there must be a corresponding shape drawn on the image.
- Specify the Blueprint, Reference, and Metadata for the item (as appropriate).
- You can use the Panning button to open a set of Panning Tools. Left, right, up and down are used to pan the image.
- The arrows at the edges of the drawing canvas indicate the direction in which a large image extends beyond the canvas view port bounds. Use these guides to know the direction in which to pan to see more of an image.
- Click the Magnification button to reveal a set of Zoom controls. These controls can be used to zoom in and out of the editor canvas as required.
The Reset All tool on the far right should be used to reset the canvas zoom to normal view (100%) and clear all shapes defined so far.
- Use the Shape drawing tools to create primary geometric shapes on the canvas - ellipse, rectangle, and polygon.
- To use these tools, select a shape then click-drag on the image canvas to introduce the shape. Remember, you must drag the mouse pointer to create a shape of the size required. A shape cannot be created if it is too small to be practically useful.
- The ellipse and rectangle shape drawing tools can be constrained to draw circles and squares by holding down the SHIFT key before click-dragging the mouse pointer.
- The polygon tool can support drawing polygons from 3 up to 8 sides. Use the Numerical Stepper next to the polygon tool to select number of sides required.
- Use the Selection tool to select a shape and move it around the canvas. This tool can also be used to reshape/resize a shape, by selecting the shape and dragging the provided vertex (vertices) on the edge of the shape.

Save the Item
You have several options to Save the item.
- Click the Add Question to Case button save the item and create a new Case. The item is automatically attached to the Case. Only users with permission to create cases will see this button.
- Click the Save button. The item is saved and the item is checked-out preventing other users from making edits to the item. You remain on the Write Question page where further edits can be made to the item.
- Click the Preview button. Changes to the item are saved, the item is checked-out, and the item is opened in the Preview window. Only users with permission to preview items will see this button.
- To save an incomplete item, click Save and Exit. The item is saved in a Draft state and checked-in so any user with access to the item may make edits to the item. It is visible in the Draft/Returned Questions tab of the Project Writing Summary page.
- To submit the item for review, click Submit. The item is saved and checked in so any users with access to the item may make edits to the item. The item is advanced to the next reviewer in the list or to the next stage in the workflow.
