The Job Task Analysis tutorial is broken down into the following sub-sections:

A Job Task Analysis (JTA) identifies and analyzes the duties of each job. This sets the framework for the exam and is a very critical step. Without this step, it is impossible to create a case for the validity of the exam.

Sometimes certifying bodies will question the importance of a Job/Task Analysis in the exam development process. Faced with time or cost constraints, they often ask if it is possible to skip the JTA process and proceed directly with the item writing.

A reasonable analogy is to ask: How important is a foundation in the design and construction of a building? Anyone knowledgeable about construction will argue you that a foundation is the most important component of a building. It would be foolish to construct any building without a solid foundation to support it. A faulty foundation is usually the most difficult and costly problem to remedy after the building is complete.

To take the illustration one step further, eventually a structure built without a solid foundation is subject to legal action against the builder's oversight. Similarly, when the basis of a high-stakes examination is questioned, the JTA is the first place that one will look when questioning an examination's merits.
